Where did HEIC come from?
HEIC is Apple's implementation of HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format), a standard finalized by the MPEG group in 2015. Apple adopted it two years later, becoming the first major company to ship it at massive scale.
The format didn't appear from nowhere. It's built on the compression technology of HEVC (also called H.265), the video codec used for 4K video. Engineers realized that the same advanced compression that shrinks video could shrink still images far more efficiently than JPEG's decades-old method.
Why JPEG needed a successor
JPEG was designed in 1992, and while brilliant for its era, its compression is primitive by modern standards. For 25 years it remained the default photo format on nearly every device — but phones were now taking 12-megapixel photos that JPEG stored inefficiently.
As phone cameras improved and storage filled up faster, the gap between JPEG's capabilities and modern needs widened. JPEG couldn't store transparency, couldn't hold multiple frames, was limited to 8-bit color, and simply produced larger files than newer math allowed. A successor was overdue.

The 2017 switch: iOS 11
In September 2017, Apple made HEIC the default photo format in iOS 11, instantly putting it on hundreds of millions of iPhones. It was the boldest mainstream adoption of a new image format in decades.
Apple paired the change with automatic conversion: when you share a HEIC photo to an app or service that doesn't support it, iOS quietly converts it to JPEG. This let Apple modernize storage without breaking the user experience — most people never noticed the change until they moved photos to a Windows PC.
Why the rest of the world was slow to follow
HEIC adoption lagged outside Apple because HEVC, the technology it's based on, carries patent licensing fees, which made other companies cautious. Windows and Android couldn't simply add free HEIC support the way they had with JPEG.
This created the familiar friction: an iPhone user emails a HEIC photo, and the Windows recipient can't open it. The format was technically superior but landed in a world built entirely around JPEG — which is exactly why conversion tools became necessary.
Where HEIC stands today
HEIC is now firmly established on Apple devices, with growing but incomplete support elsewhere. Windows 10 and 11 can view HEIC with an add-on, Android 10+ supports HEIF natively, and many photo apps now read it.
Still, JPEG remains the universal lingua franca of digital images. For maximum compatibility — sharing, uploading, printing, or editing in older software — converting HEIC to JPEG remains the practical choice, which is what this site exists to make instant and private.
