What does HEIC stand for?
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is the file format that Apple uses to store photos taken on iPhones and iPads. When you take a photo with an iPhone running iOS 11 or later, that photo is saved as a HEIC file unless you have changed your camera settings.
The name describes what the format does: it is a container for images that achieves high efficiency — meaning it stores the same visual information as older formats in significantly less storage space.
What does HEIF stand for?
HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image Format. It is the open standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) — the same organisation responsible for the MP3 and MP4 formats.
HEIF is the specification (the rules for how images should be stored), while HEIC is Apple's implementation of that specification. Think of HEIF as the engineering standard and HEIC as Apple's product built to that standard. Why did Apple switch from JPEG to HEIC?
The switch came down to two practical problems: storage space and image quality.
By 2017, iPhone cameras had grown to 12 megapixels. A typical 12MP JPEG photo is between 3–6 MB. With hundreds of photos on a typical iPhone, JPEG's file sizes were consuming device storage rapidly — a constant source of the dreaded "Storage Almost Full" notification that iPhone users know well.

Why can't Windows, Android, and the web open HEIC?
The compatibility problem stems from patents. HEIC uses H.265 (HEVC) compression — the same video codec used in streaming services like Netflix and Disney+. H.265 is covered by a complex licensing structure managed by multiple patent pools.
Apple pays these licensing fees for iOS and macOS devices, which is why iPhones and Macs open HEIC natively. However, other platforms chose differently:
- Microsoft does not include H.265 decoding in Windows by default, instead selling it as a paid add-on (HEVC Video Extensions) in the Microsoft Store
- Google has added partial HEIC support to newer versions of Android, but Chrome browser still cannot display HEIC files
